Today Show Makes Positive Proton Point

NBC's Today Show is commended for its March 22nd segment on proton therapy's role in fighting cancer. Saying proton radiation is "getting an increasing amount of attention," reporter Melissa Stark and her TV crew paid a visit to Loma Linda University Medical Center's Proton Therapy Center for a look at how it works. She interviewed a patient being treated for a rare central nervous system tumor who had already undergone surgery to remove the tumor. Stark also interviewed a man undergoing treatment for prostate cancer who was from Washington state. In an interview with Loma Linda's chief of radiation medicine, Dr. Jerry D. Slater, it was mentioned that proton therapy plays an important role in pediatrics and is beneficial for children's tumors because it spares them the harmful effects from standard radiation treatment.
